HCC Pool Stage – Montpellier 14 Leinster Rugby 35

A consolation try from Gabriel N’gandebe and nine points from the boot of Benoit Paillaugue were not enough for Montpellier as they fell to a convincing defeat by Leinster Rugby at the GGL Stadium in their opening Heineken Champions Cup Pool Stage match.

The 2018 Heineken Champions Cup winners were on top from start to finish, scoring five tries, including two for European debutants Ciaran Frawley and Jimmy O’Brien.

HCC Pool Stage – Wasps 33 Montpellier 14

Montpellier suffered their second Heineken Champions Cup Pool Stage defeat in a row as Alfie Barbeary bagged two tries and the Heineken Star of the Match in a comprehensive win in Coventry.

Montpellier were given a lot do when Henry Immelman was sent off in the opening 10 minutes, but did show some determination either side of half-time, with back-to-back tries from Alex Lozowski and Yvan Reilhac

Round of 16 – Montpellier 26 Glasgow Warriors 21

Montpellier held on to narrowly beat a plucky Glasgow side and progress to the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.

The first half saw Glasgow go ahead early on through fly-half Adam Hastings, before Montpellier counterpart Alex Lozowksi, who racked up 16 points in the tie, levelled.

Anthony Bouthier also crossed the whitewash and Lozowski kept the scoreboard ticking over to secure the French side’s spot in the last eight.

Quarter-final – Montpellier 31 Benetton Rugby 25

Benoit Paillaugue amassed 23 points as Montpellier booked their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought home victory over Benetton Rugby.

20-year-old fly-half Paolo Garbisi, who scored all bar three of Benetton’s points, and Montpellier’s Paillaugue exchanged early penalties in what would be a running theme over the course of the first half.

However, it was a brace of tries from Paillaugue and one from Paul Willemse that ensured Montpellier’s spot in the last four.

Semi-final – Bath Rugby 10 Montpellier 19

Montpellier put in a herculean defensive display to defeat Bath Rugby at the Recreation Ground and secure a spot in the Challenge Cup final.

The French side managed to hold Bath scoreless in the second period despite coming under severe pressure throughout, having made a slow start.

Tom Dunn gave Bath the lead, but Montpellier worked their way back into the contest thanks to a Yacouba Camara try, with 11 points from Benoit Paillaugue sending Montpellier into a second Challenge Cup final.
