It was also the one and only time that Scarlets have won all six of their pool games in Europe’s elite club competition, and the run included a brace of victories over French giants Toulouse - 20-19 at home and, memorably, 41-34 away.

“We played a good brand of rugby, but there were probably two big turning points,” Welsh international hooker Owens recalled exclusively on the Champions Rugby Show.

“For Toulouse at home, our discipline that day was absolutely fantastic. We only gave away one penalty and got a great result, as they were favourites that season.

“Then we went out to Toulouse for a 1230 kick-off the week after and I think we were 30-odd points down at half-time.

“Luckily, Dav James scored a try right on half-time, which kept us in the game and probably took the pressure off a little bit. We just started playing and played some absolutely fantastic rugby. That kick-started our run that year and gave us a huge amount of confidence.”

Scarlets followed up by completing the double over Ulster Rugby and London Irish to draw Munster Rugby at home in the quarter-finals, and went on to topple the defending champions in Llanelli 24-15.

“Once we had won six from six, we qualified top of the group and got Munster, which is always a massive game with their European pedigree and the quality stars that they’ve got,” the 33-year-old remembered.

“It was the first time I’d ever seen Stradey Park like that, although it was only my first season. We knew the challenge that was there.

“Everything went right for us that day and we played some outstanding stuff. We were right on edge. It was meant to be that day and it was a huge result against a quality side.”

Unfortunately for Scarlets and their followers, that was as good as it got, since they lost 33-17 to Leicester Tigers in the semi-finals at The Walkers Stadium.

The Welsh region then had to wait another 11 years to qualify for the knockout stages of the European Cup.
