With Exeter runaway leaders of the Gallagher Premiership, Mola believes the four-time winners will need to move up a gear to stay on track for a record fifth European crown.

“It’s a second semi-final in a row and to be able to play a leading role in Europe, you have to qualify regularly. That’s the case with this squad, but we have to be more precise in the semi-finals,” he said.

“We understand that teams who dominate Europe don’t do it spontaneously. Rather, they are constructed over years and cycles. So, for this squad, who are still very young, to reach another semi is really satisfying.”

An exception to the youth of the Toulouse squad is their 37-year-old captain, New Zealander Jerome Kaino, who is thrilled to be leading such a promising group of players.

“My main motivation is to ensure that the younger generation play at a good level,” said the back-row forward. “Ever since the 2019 semi-final against Leinster our team has grown and learnt a lot.

“The possibility of winning the Champions Cup is something very special and very prestigious.”
