The 28-year-old fly-half, who was loaned to Montpellier Hérault Rugby last season after winning two European titles with Saracens, was named man of the match after kicking seven penalties and creating the game’s only try with a delightful grubber kick for wing Alex Lewington.

However, it was hosts Bristol who put the first points on the board at Ashton Gate, with Callum Sheedy nudging over a penalty after five minutes.

Lozowski levelled the scores from the tee six minutes later, only for Sheedy to land two more penalties with less than 20 minutes played.

They proved to be the home side’s final points of the game, though, as Lozowski continued to punish the Bears’ frequent ill-discipline, adding six more three-pointers, including several from around the halfway line.

He then rounded off a standout performance on 71 minutes by sliding a perfectly-weighted kick behind the Bristol defence, which Lewington gathered to score and seal a convincing win for Saracens.

This season will also see Saracens return to European rugby, with Mark McCall’s side set to compete in the Challenge Cup, while Bristol take on Stade Français Paris and Scarlets in the Heineken Champions Cup.
