2015 European Rugby Champions Cup final: ASM Clermont Auvergne 18 RC Toulon 24

Toulon etched their name into EPCR history at Twickenham Stadium as they became the first team to win the Champions Cup three times in a row.

Having beaten Clermont and Saracens in the 2013 and 2014 finals respectively, Toulon overcame their French rivals again in an exhilarating contest in London.

Clermont took charge early on as Camille Lopez struck two penalties, with Leigh Halfpenny replying with one for Toulon.

Wesley Fofana then notched the first try of the game for Clermont with an opportunistic effort and though Lopez couldn’t convert, their lead grew to eight points.

However, two more Halfpenny penalties reduced the margin, before Mathieu Bastareaud struck for Toulon on the stroke of half-time, charging down a kick before blasting over in the corner.

Halfpenny converted to put Toulon 16-11 up at the break and added another three points to his side’s tally 11 minutes into the second half.

But Clermont wouldn’t go down without a fight and when Nick Abendanon crossed for a stunning individual score on 62 minutes, running from deep and chipping over the last defender, they were within touching distance, Lopez’s conversion bringing the gap down to a single point.

A breathless conclusion to the game then ensued, with Toulon’s Ali Williams seeing a try ruled out by the TMO, before Drew Mitchell produced another sensational solo effort to edge his side closer to a third successive title.

Halfpenny missed the conversion, setting up a nervy final 11 minutes, but Clermont were unable to batter their way through a staunch Toulon defence and ultimately fell to a third loss in EPCR finals.
