Leinster’s reign as Heineken Cup champions ended at Le Stadium, where Toulouse clinched a sixth Heineken Cup final thanks to two second-half tries.

The French club claimed a 9-0 lead with three David Skrela penalties, only for Leinster to level matters with two Shaun Berne penalties and a massive Rob Kearney kick.

However, tries from Yannick Jauzion and Skrela inside four minutes, converted by Skrela, put Toulouse in command, and although a Jamie Heaslip try, goaled by Berne, cut their lead, Skrela kicked another penalty to seal victory.

Toulouse went on to beat Biarritz Olympique 21-19 in the final in Paris to lift the trophy for the fourth time.

Leinster sealed a Heineken Champions Cup final meeting with Saracens after a comprehensive victory over Toulouse at the Aviva Stadium.

Tries from James Lowe, Luke McGrath and Scott Fardy, all of which were converted by Johnny Sexton, did the damage against a Toulouse side who battled hard but could not take advantage of possession in the Leinster 22 throughout the match.

In the end, all the French club had to show for their possession were four penalties – three from Thomas Ramos and one from Romain Ntamack.

Sexton also kicked two penalties for a match haul of 12 points, with Ross Byrne’s late three-pointer completing the scoring.

Leinster came unstuck in the final, though, succumbing 20-10 to Saracens in Newcastle.

2021/22 Leinster Rugby 40 Stade Toulousain 17

Leinster advanced to the Heineken Champions Cup final for the sixth time as a try brace from James Lowe helped them to a massive victory over reigning champions Stade Toulousain at the Aviva Stadium.

Josh van der Flier and Hugo Keenan also crossed for the Irish province, with the influential Johnny Sexton kicking 15 points via three conversions and three penalties, before Ross Byrne, his replacement, added a late conversion of Keenan’s try and penalty.

Toulouse went ahead early on through an Antoine Dupont try converted by Thomas Ramos, but were ultimately overwhelmed by the hosts, with Selevasio Tolofua’s second-half score, also improved by Ramos proving insignificant. Ramos landed one penalty as well.

Leinster again lost in the final, this time going down 24-21 to Stade Rochelais in Marseille.

Leinster Rugby hold a narrow 2-1 advantage in their previous Heineken Champions Cup semi-final clashes with Stade Toulousain as they prepare for a fourth titanic encounter, at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on April 29.
