ASM Clermont Auvergne 22 Leicester Tigers 16

Clermont stretched their astonishing unbeaten home record to 75 matches in a dramatic Heineken Cup quarter-final at the Stade Marcel-Michelin, although Leicester went very close to ending it.

The English side trailed only 19-16 at the start of the final quarter, having been 16-0 down after only 35 minutes, but Morgan Parra kicked his fifth penalty to boost his match haul to 17 points and guide the 2013 runners-up into the last four.

Clermont had controlled the first half and scored their only try on 22 minutes, after Parra had landed his first penalty in the 15th minute.

Leicester twice failed to halt Aurelien Rougerie as he linked up with co-centre Wesley Fofana, who then freed Davit Zirakashvili before taking the prop's return pass to dot down.

Parra converted from wide out and kicked two more penalties, in the 27th and 35th minutes, to stretch Clermont’s lead to 16-0, with Owen Williams wasting a chance to get Leicester on the scoreboard when he hit a post with a penalty.

However, the visitors finally broke their duck three minutes before the break, when Williams’ perfect cross-kick landed in Jamie Gibson’s lap and he linked up with Blaine Scully, who put Jordan Crane in close enough to the posts for Williams to convert.

Parra’s third penalty right on the half-time whistle gave Clermont a 19-7 interval lead, but it was Leicester who took command on the restart.

The home side began leaking penalties and Williams capitalised to strike in the 45th, 52nd and 62nd minutes to put Leicester back within striking distance.

However, Leicester replacement Thomas Waldrom was then yellow-carded for illegally trying to halt a Clermont drive and that rather stopped the Tigers’ fightback, especially when Parra notched his fifth penalty.

Clermont were crushed 46-6 by Saracens at Twickenham Stadium in the semi-finals.
