The blockbuster move has been made to see the Springboks superstar move from the Stade Ernest-Wallon to the Stade Felix Mayol, joining fellow South Africa international Eben Etzebeth as well as South African-born duo Quinn Roux and Cornell du Preez at the 2020 Challenge Cup finalists.

Kolbe has scored six tries in his 19 Heineken Champions Cup appearances for Toulouse, including a brace in last season’s opening match against Ulster Rugby in Belfast.

The 27-year-old also featured in knockout stage wins over Munster Rugby, ASM Clermont Auvergne and Bordeaux-Begles last season as well as their final success over Stade Rochelais at Twickenham Stadium.

They would go on to defeat the same opponents the following month in the TOP 14 final, securing the first French European and domestic double since RC Toulon in 2014.

Toulon President Bernard Lemaitre said of the move: “We promised ourselves that we would be less dependent on internationals because we paid a heavy price last season.

“But this is an exception made for an exceptional player. A lot of things are now favourable to Toulon.

“It is an important operation and not easy to carry out to in terms of the salary cap. It’s a really exceptional opportunity, especially since we needed a game-winner in the backline. For a more average player, we would not have done it.”
