1998: Bath Rugby 19 CA Brive 18

The third edition of the tournament produced a tense and dramatic final between Bath and Brive at the Stade Lescure in Bordeaux.

Bath survived relentless Brive pressure in the second half before Jon Callard clinched victory for Bath with his fourth penalty of the game.

Brive looked set to lift the trophy thanks to five Christophe Lamaison penalties and an Alain Penaud drop-goal, but Callard was the hero for Bath, scoring – and converting - a try in addition to his penalties as he contributed all their points.

2000: Northampton Saints 9 Munster Rugby 8

There was another nail-biting showpiece game two years later as Northampton claimed the trophy for the first time with a gritty display in front of almost 70,000 at Twickenham Stadium.

Three Paul Grayson penalties were enough for Saints as they recovered from 8-3 down, a David Wallace try and Jason Holland drop-goal putting the Irish province in control for a short period.

2013: ASM Clermont Auvergne 15 RC Toulon 16

13 years later, Toulon secured the first of their three successive titles with a terrific comeback against domestic rivals Clermont at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Tries from Naipolioni Nalaga and Brock James plus five points from the boot of Morgan Parra had Clermont on course for glory with just over half an hour to play.

But three Jonny Wilkinson penalties kept Toulon in contention before Delon Armitage went over on 63 minutes, Wilkinson holding his nerve to convert and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

2023: Stade Rochelais 27 Leinster Rugby 26

A sold-out Aviva Stadium hosted another thrilling final this year as La Rochelle delivered a remarkable turnaround to stun Leinster.

The Irish province were on course for a record-equalling fifth crown when Dan Sheehan (2) and Jimmy O’Brien crossed inside the first quarter of an hour.

But Jonathan Danty, UJ Seuteni and Georges Henri Colombe went over and Antoine Hastoy kicked 12 points, including a vital conversion of La Rochelle’s third score with eight minutes to go, to see Ronan O’Gara’s side secure back-to-back titles.
