Edinburgh are top of the pool, but only on points difference from Bordeaux, while Wasps, whom the Scottish team face in their next two matches in December, are just two points behind the pair.

“For them, it’s a moral victory for sure,” Cockerill, speaking to the Edinburgh website, said of Bordeaux’s draw. “They know that we’ve got to go there, but there’s a long way to go and a lot can happen.

“I’m disappointed with the draw. But they’re a good team and if you switch off for a second, or you make basic errors and give them opportunity, then they’ll take it.

“They’ve got quality players and they take advantage of you giving away a soft penalty or you turning the ball over or you missing a tackle - they punish you.

“We’ve got to make sure those things are better for us. We’d like to think our standards are better than parts of that.

“Some parts were really good, but other parts, where those basic errors come in, we’ve got to learn from them and we’ve got to make better decisions at those crucial times.

“They’re second in their competition because they’re a very good team. I think we should take a little bit of solace in that it was a game we probably should have won.

“But we need to learn our lessons quickly around big games against good teams. We have to make sure the small moments fall our way a bit more.”
