After their 13-try spectacular against Northampton Saints in January, ASM Clermont Auvergne director of rugby Franck Azéma is preparing his side for a thunderous encounter when the clubs meet again at Stade Marcel-Michelin in the European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-finals on Sunday. Clermont won both their Pool 1 matches against the English side as they matched Ospreys’ record of a maximum 30 points from their six games, cruising home 41-20 at Franklin’s Gardens in October before triumphing 48-40 in that try fest in France in Round 5. But Azéma pointed out: “We know we’re playing for something big – in the pool stages there isn’t the same tension. Since the pool phase Northampton’s confidence has improved and we note they now have the third best attack in the English championship. [But] I’m expecting cohesiveness in both attack and defence.” Azéma’s views are matched by those of his players, who have lifted Clermont into second place in the TOP 14 after amassing 44 tries in Pool 1 of the Challenge Cup.
