Saracens’ Owen Farrell, playing in the centre, kicked eight conversions, but it was Adams who took the main plaudits with his quartet of tries – including three in the second period.

Elsewhere, Wales amassed 10 tries at the Principality Stadium as they hammered Canada 68-12, with Cardiff scrum-half Tomos Williams and the Dragons’ duo of wing Jonah Holmes and debutant flanker Taine Basham leading the way with two apiece.

Cardiff flanker James Botham, Ospreys prop Nicky Smith, Dragons hooker Elliot Dee and Wasps lock Will Rowlands also dotted down, while Bristol Bears fly-half Callum Sheedy and Cardiff replacement Ben Thomas added nine conversions between them.

However, the victory was overshadowed by a knee injury suffered by Scarlets full-back Leigh Halfpenny, who had to be replaced after just two minutes.
