The Gallagher Premiership club were even within only one try of the Scottish side at 12-7 with nine minutes to go, but they then conceded 10 points via a late penalty and a converted try to leave Glasgow empty-handed.

“We’ve worked hard,” he reflected. “[At] 3-0 at half-time, it’s a really good Heineken Cup game, very competitive, and defences are on top.

“[But] we just couldn’t string passages together to stretch Glasgow. A lot of that is down to Glasgow. They played very well today. [But] it does feel like we’ve made it a little easier than we needed to.

“I don’t think I’ve seen us give up ball like that in a Heineken Cup game for a long time. Yes, some of it was forced, but some of it wasn’t. We struggled so much in possession. It was scary, really.”

Baxter had been looking to at least come away with a losing bonus point, after hammering Montpellier Hérault Rugby 42-6 at Sandy Park in Round 1.

“We’d got back to within the bonus point range,” he pointed out. “In some ways in Europe that’s not a bad result, backing up five points last week with a hard-fought point today - you can move forward.

“To let that slip with another relatively soft penalty is a frustration. But it was the tale of the game.”
