We’ve taken a look through the history books to highlight Glasgow’s most successful campaigns in EPCR’s premier competition, which include a trio of quarter final appearances.

1997-98 Quarter-Final playoff

Glasgow reached the quarter-final playoff stage of the third edition of the Heineken Champions Cup following a solid Pool 2 campaign against Wasps, Swansea and Ulster Rugby.

After opening the tournament with a 18-12 win over the Irish province, Glasgow lost 46-22 to Wasps. A 35-21 win over Swansea was followed by another defeat against the English opposition. A 30-22 reverse against their Welsh foes left their qualification hopes in the balance.

A final day 30-15 win over Ulster secured their path to the quarter-final play-offs where they were defeated 90-19 by Leicester Tigers – one of the biggest scorelines in the competition's history.

2016/17 Quarter-Final

It took almost two decades for Glasgow to return to the quarter-finals as they advanced from Pool 1 of the 2016/17 edition from a group including Munster Rugby, Leicester Tigers and Racing 92.

Glasgow opened the campaign with a 42-13 mauling of Leicester before a trip to Ireland brought the Warriors back down to earth with a 38-17 reverse to Munster. A pair of closely fought wins over Racing 92 put the Scottish side in contention, before a narrow 14-12 defeat to Munster and 43-0 triumph over Leicester secured their knockout berth.

Unfortunately, Glasgow ran into the powerhouse that was Saracens in the last eight and fell to a 38-13 defeat with Lee Jones and Ryan Wilson notching the two tries for the Scottish outfit.

2018/19 Quarter-Final

Glasgow returned to the knockout stages two years later and were drawn with a familiar foe in Saracens – as well as Cardiff Blues and Lyon in the Pool Stage.

The Warriors defeated their French and Welsh opposition twice on their way to the knockout stage, with two defeats to the English side.

However, the seeding was unkind to the Scottish outfit as they were forced to face Saracens for a third time in the competition. A 56-27 reverse condemned Glasgow to the exit door despite tries from Alistair Price, Matt Fagerson and George Horne.

Glasgow Warriors secured their return to the Heineken Champions Cup with a fourth-place finish in the United Rugby Championship in 2022/23. After finishing runner-up in the EPCR Challenge Cup this season, they’ll be hoping for continued success in EPCR competition next term.
