Gloucester came out on top when the two sides met in Round 3 a decade ago, roaring into a 23-5 lead with 50 minutes played.

Greig Tonks’ try put Edinburgh in front early on, but the English visitors notched 23 unanswered points as Rob Cook and Martyn Thomas (2) crossed, with Freddie Burns contributing eight from the tee.

David Denton went over to hand Edinburgh some hope with half an hour to play, but the Scottish region were unable to reduce the deficit further, even when Gloucester’s James Hudson was sin-binned on the hour mark.

Edinburgh bounced back in Round 4 as they claimed a commendable win at Kingsholm Stadium, much thanks to the efforts of Jack Cuthbert.

The full-back tallied a decisive 11 points, kicking three penalties and converting Ben Atiga’s try on 50 minutes.

Gloucester had taken the lead through a penalty try and a Freddie Burns three-pointer, but succumbed to a rejuvenated Scottish region.

The following season the two sides faced off in the showpiece game and a 14-man Gloucester side prevailed at Twickenham Stoop.

The English outfit stamped their authority on the contest when Billy Twelvetrees crossed on 10 minutes, with Greig Laidlaw converting and adding two penalties before half-time.

Edinburgh were only able to muster two Sam Hidalgo-Clyne penalties in the first half and were 13 points down on 53 minutes as Laidlaw struck twice more from the tee.

Bill Meakes was sent off for a high tackle 10 minutes later and Ross Ford dotted down for Edinburgh to put Gloucester under immense pressure, but they would hold out to clinch the trophy for a second time.

Edinburgh Rugby and Gloucester Rugby meet again in the 2023/24 EPCR Challenge Cup pool stage, having faced off in the 2015 final and enjoyed two entertaining encounters in the 2013/14 competition.
