The 22-year-old is set to undergo surgery and will be replaced by another Champions Cup star – Northampton Saints counterpart Alex Mitchell – in Steve Borthwick’s squad for the tournament in France.

Van Poortvliet has established himself as a key figure for Leicester in recent seasons, having debuted in EPCR competitions in the Challenge Cup in 2020.

He has featured five times in each of the last two Heineken Champions Cup campaigns, which saw Leicester reach back-to-back quarter-finals.

Van Poortvliet managed a try in each of those campaigns, dotting down against ASM Clermont Auvergne in the 2021/22 Round of 16 before crossing against Ospreys last season.
